The first mechanical picker in Rosati was self-propelled and had an engine and driver's seat positioned on the top of the machine. The harvester pictured here is pulled by a tractor and powered by the tractor's hydraulic system and power take-off.

The harvester straddles a row of grapes while Fiberglas rods in the center of the machine move very quickly in a horizontal motion and slap against the vines. The berries are shaken loose from the stems and fall to the bottom of the harvester where conveyers with buckets move the berries to the top of the machine.

The top conveyers move the berries across and over the next row where they fall into containers on a trailer pulled by a tractor. The driver must carefully match his speed to that of the harvester so the container stays positioned directly below the chute. A worker on the trailer removes leaves which occasionally make it past cleaning fans on the harvester. The worker also holds the chute steady and keeps it positioned inside the container.

The containers are loaded onto a truck and taken to their destination. This crop went to the Welch Company's processing plant in Springdale, Arkansas where most of the Rosati area growers shipped their grapes for many years.
